1. What did you think of Hattie McDaniel before you read the book?

Discussion on The Queen of Sugar Hill by ReShonda Tate - Together We Read's March 2025 book club pick! The Queen of Sugar Hill by ReShonda Tate offers a vivid portrait of Hattie McDaniel, the first Black Oscar winner whose historic triumph was followed by career struggles, public criticism, and personal heartbreak. Navigating racism, rejection from both Black and White communities, and the so-called “Oscar curse,” Hattie fought to carve out space for herself and future generations of actors. This powerful novel captures her resilience, ambition, and determination to succeed against all odds.

I only knew of her work from watching the movie Gone with the Wind. Everyone I watch the movie I cringe and think about how demeaning it must have felt to play the role of Hattie. I cringe at how much pishbacl she must have gotten from her peers for portraying the white man's stereotypical perspective of a slave.

I knew little about Ms. McDaniel other than that she was an actress and won an Oscar for Gone with the Wind. I was intrigued by the book as I was born basically in the middle of the narrative dates. It is an interesting reflection on a time period to read about as it impacted me but is not in my memory bank.

I am embarrassed to say I never heard of her but probably should also be embarrassed to say I have not seen Gone With the Wind. I will correct that oversight soon and am sure I will pay special attention to Hattie’s character with a lot more insight that I would have otherwise.

I honestly had never heard of her. I have never been big at reading about Hollywood stars. I could not have told anyone who she was without the help of Google.

I knew she was the first woman to win an Oscar but that was really all I knew about her.
